I was once asked, “What would you title this chapter of your life?” My answer became Her Story, a 40-piece, three-part series that began out of the place of finding myself and ends at a place of home.
Her Story took just over 4 years to create. Each piece was painted and constructed from upcycled materials. The Lady series arose from the need to write a new chapter in my life’s pictography. The story started as an outlet of the pain of heartbreak and dishonesty. The ladies became queens with tilted crowns and powerful fists to signify strength, triumph and royalty. The months spent creating and re-creating each lady was in fact to recreate myself.
As an Oakland native, Home Series conveys my roots, and is (all puns intended) the heart of the show. It’s a display of both words and paint-splattered human anatomy that gives visual meaning to the saying, “Home is where the heart is.”
The Power Series came on heels of the 2020 uprising. The fist was formed in demonstration signs protesting state violence and the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Quickly, the pain and turmoil of the movement spun into nightly production of vivid colors transforming power beyond norms of the fiery fist into any blend imaginable. I used colors often unseen in movement art to show how the movement has spun into all realms and people.
